Putting Green Installation
A backyard putting green is a different build entirely from a standard lawn — it requires precise sub-base contouring to create realistic breaks, plus a fast-nap turf product designed specifically for accurate ball roll rather than general landscaping.
The design phase is where a putting green succeeds or fails. We work with homeowners on the available footprint, discussing green size, the number of cup positions, and how much undulation and break to build into the contours so the finished green offers real variety rather than a flat, uninteresting surface.
Sub-base construction is more technical than a standard lawn installation. Instead of a uniformly flat compacted base, we shape the base material itself to create the contours and slopes that give the green its break, which has to be done correctly before any turf is installed since it can't be adjusted afterward.
Turf selection for putting greens differs from landscape turf in pile height, density, and nap direction — all chosen specifically to produce a consistent, true ball roll rather than for visual appearance alone. This is a golf-specific product category, and using standard landscape turf on a green produces an unpredictable, inconsistent roll.
Once the green's turf is installed, we finish the surrounding area with a fringe or rough-cut turf border, which completes the look of a real course and gives golfers a realistic short-game practice environment, including chips and approach shots into the green.
Cup placement is typically designed to be adjustable or to include multiple hole positions, so the green offers variety rather than a single static target — something we discuss directly with homeowners during design.
Maintenance for a putting green involves occasional brushing to maintain nap direction and consistent roll, along with periodic infill checks, since infill depth directly affects ball speed and roll characteristics on a green far more than it does on a standard lawn.
Because putting greens see repetitive, concentrated ball contact in a relatively small footprint, we use commercial-grade golf turf products rather than standard residential turf, ensuring the green holds its playing characteristics for years rather than developing worn or uneven spots.
